I figure for a loving relationship to be worth something, to love has to be freely chosen, and should be more to do with valuing the happiness of another, or others, and less to do with infatuation or personal gratification.

I figure for a loving relationship to be meaningful, the choice to not love has to remain an option ... and one that is free from fear of consequences. Otherwise one can never be sure that expressions of love are not simply a smoke-screen for self-interest.

I figure for a loving relationship to be real there has to be genuine independence between the lovers. It is the choosing to place importance on another's desires and needs that generates the substance ... more so than the experience of being loved or being in love.
